Henry Hudson Bridge from Inwood Park
Establishing a bridge of commerce between urban and rural permaculture communities.

This site centers around the idea that billions of people can't live exclusively in either cities or rural areas alone. Cities help with transportation efficiency, social needs, and anything benefiting from economy of scale. However, this stacking of people far exceeds the ability to sustain so many people on a relatively small size of land. On the other hand, by spreading everyone out into the density that can sustain them, we lose the benefit of scale, thereby increasing humanities land needs. A smaller population may care little about these resources given the ability of the planet to recover. However, humanities numbers are no longer small. By coordinating these two wildly different lifestyles, a parity can be achieved.

As we begin to explore limits to our planetary carrying capacity, this site hopes to provide, a tool for bridging back to a more permanent and sustainable culture, hence permaculture.

Mollison interview from seeds of change

LONDON: Short of starting a farm, what can we do
to make our cities more sustainable?

MOLLISON: Catch the water off your roof. Grow your
own food. Make your own energy. It's
insanely easy to do all that.

A quote found on a permaculture listserv

"Permaculture offers a radical approach to food production and urban renewal,
water, energy and pollution. It integrates ecology, landscape, organic
gardening, architecture and agro-forestry in creating a rich and sustainable
way of living. It uses appropriate technology giving high yields for low
energy inputs, achieving a resource of great diversity and stability. The
design principles are equally applicable to both urban and rural dwellers"
